Derek Jarman: Protest! FREE Exhibition Tour

Portraits of Recovery in collaboration with Sober Gay Socials invites you to an artist-led tour of Derek Jarman’s current exhibition Protest! At Manchester Art Gallery. 

Protest! is a major retrospective of the work of one of the most influential figures in 20th century Queer British culture, Derek Jarman (1942-1994). The exhibition focuses on the diverse strands of Jarman’s practice as a painter, film maker, writer, set-designer, gardener and political activist. This is the first time that all these strands of his practice have been brought together in over 20 years. Protest! captures Jarman’s engagement with both art and society, as well as his contemporary concerns with political protest and personal freedoms arising from the AIDS crisis. Major bodies of work, from the 1960s to the 1990s, have been brought together; many of which have never been seen in public before. 

The tour will be led by Jez Dolan, artist in residence at Manchester Art Gallery throughout the exhibition period. Jez works from studios at Paradise Works, Salford. Derek Jarman is a central influence on his work as an artist and his practice underlines the intersections between queerness, sexuality, identity and memory. 
 
During his residency, Jez has been working on a new body of work, as well as curating and delivering a series of public performances and participatory events, including commissioning projects with emerging LGBT+ artists, performances, discussions and workshops.  

The tour will last approximately one hour, followed by coffee and cake (at your own expense) in the gallery café.
